authors thoughts
I understand that there are nuances to every situation, and my goal for this website was not to shame those who use/consume animal products. Economies everywhere rely on the consumption of animal products. I don't shame a snake for eating a mouse, they gotta eat to live, and after all humans are just animals too. However I do have a problem with purposely and maliciously harming the environment out gluttony and sloth. The goal of this website, besides getting a good grade on my final, is to inform. Ignorance is nature's downfall. Humans are not inherently evil, and I doubt that most people would want to absolutely annihilate the ecosystem. This is not an outraged yell of hate, but a cry of concern.
there is still hope
It may seem hopeless, but with group effort we can change. After the hole in the Ozone layer was found in 1985 there was action taken to intervene with the hole's progress. With enough time and effort scientists found that the hole in the ozone layer had shrunk by 1.5 million square miles, based on their measurements every September since 2000 to 2015. We can reverse the damage if we try. If everyone is informed and wants to make a collective effort there is nothing stopping us. In regards to shark fining on March 9th 2017 Ed Royce and Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan introduced the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. This would ban the buying and selling of Shark fin in the U.S. The following statistics are from mission Blue's article on the legislation:
• 8 in 10 people support a shark fin trade ban • 89% of voters agree that shark fining is a cruel and wasteful practice. • 75% of registered Republicans support the legislation. • 84% of registered Democrats support the legislation. • 91% of Americans 65 years and older register the highest amount of support for the bill. • 84% of women support the bill and 76% of men support the bill. We can do this, just have hope. |
